Escape the buzz of the city in seconds by way of the lush, serene greens of San Francisco’s Presidio. A former military fort, the Presidio has been given a handsome refresh in recent years, transforming its 1,480 acres into a nature-centric destination complete with Pleasant-ville style homes, high-tech offices, and one stunning “Great Lawn” that spans 7 acres. Among the highlights in the revitalized district, the Inn at the Presidio stands as its first and only hotel property. The Inn offers remarkable access to nature without compromising the modern comforts of a fine boutique hotel for vacationers and business-travelers alike. Here’s what we loved about our stay at the Inn at the Presidio.

What’s Hot

The vintage-chic property is perfect for the traveler looking for a unique getaway, unwilling to decide between the lure of the city and the clean air of the countryside. An army barracks built in 1903 in the Presidio’s signature Georgian Revival-style, the 26-room hotel was unveiled in 2012. The Inn’s location in the heart of the Presidio offers easy access to the district’s 24-plus miles of hiking trails, eight scenic overlooks, and the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Best Feature

As you prepare to head out for the evening, make it a priority to stop by the nightly complimentary happy hour where wine and cheese is served in the dining lounge. The Inn sets the tone for an easy going social hour as guests mingle, swap hiking tips, and gush over the understated charm of the building. Take your snacks to the either the fire pit or the front porch, where rocking chairs are at their ready.

The Rooms

Antique accents, wrought-iron bed frames, and bathrooms that impress with vintage fixtures add charm and character to the Inn’s rooms. There are six categories of accommodations in the main building, ranging from a standard queen to a plus-sized king suite complete with a private veranda and fireplace.

The Food

Keep in mind that the Inn is remote so nearby dining options are almost non-existent. The Inn offers a complimentary breakfast each morning with fresh fruit, baked goods, and coffee. For all other dining needs, hop in a quick rideshare and head into town for some of the west coast’s greatest eats. Breakfast is best at Sweet Maple, though don’t fill up too much as the tacos at Tacolicious are a must for lunch. As for dinner, whatever the wait time is, it’s worth it at Zuni Café, where the roast chicken for two is the best bird we’ve ever had.

Who Will Love It

The traveler who appreciates a contemporary yet vintage feel set amidst a serene nature preserve, yet close enough to the city that a rideshare is always affordable.

Who Might Not

First time visitors to San Francisco who seek to stay in the heart of the action will be disappointed by the Inn’s remote location. The resort is a 20-minute drive to the one of the city’s main tourist magnets, Union Square, and a 12-minute drive to Fisherman’s Wharf.

Nearby

The property is within walking distance to all of the sights of the Presidio, and a scenic 30-minute walk to the Golden Gate Bridge. Take the time to stroll over to The Walt Disney Family Museum, where a treasure trove of Disney magic is on display. The museum traces the history of Walt Disney and his remarkable achievements in film and family entertainment, including a thrilling miniature-scale of Disneyland.
