In what has become an annual highly anticipated sale, dozens of hotels and resorts have gotten into the Black Friday and Cyber Monday game, offering deals that must be booked either the day after Thanksgiving (November 28 this year) or the following Monday (December 1) for varying days of travel.
We’ve got the scoop on so many great travel deals for this year’s sales that we’re trying something different. Instead of one big, overwhelming list, we’re sharing themed roundups for easier vacation planning. First up is the Beach edition — whether you yearn for bustling Waikiki Beach in Hawaii or Florida’s quiet Gulf Coast side, you’ll find up to 50 percent discounts next week.
Mark your calendars, then check back in the coming days for our Urban, International, and Adventure editions.
When you dream of a Hawaiian vacation, is it a quiet, remote location or a bustling city that you see in your mind? Many people may want to get away from the big city, but there are plenty of reasons to plant yourself in Honolulu, despite the crowds. Here’s our pick of Honolulu highlights that will allow you to avoid the standard tourist scene.
Waikiki, the prime location choice for travelers to Oahu, was once dominated by large expensive hotels and budget bare-bones ones. But in recent years, several boutique chains have been upgrading the older, small properties – meaning travelers can enjoy more personal service as well as good value so long as they’re willing to pass up some frills like the spa, room service, or a lobby bar. If you appreciate a good boutique but don’t want to break the bank, consider these properties on your next visit. (Only one of them charges a resort fee — and all offer free wifi.)
Between the killer waves, unbeatable seafood, and lush landscapes, the amazing islands of Hawaii manage to captivate pretty much every traveler who visits. If you’re considering a repeat visit of your own, now’s the time to start planning – each May, a tiny tourism lull between the end of winter and the start of busy summer means a significant drop in hotel rates. Our advice? Snap up one of these eight great deals, catering to a range of budgets, while you still can: Read more
With Hawaiian Airlines adding to its list of routes, such as the recent launch of its New York to Auckland service, chances are increasing that you might find yourself in Honolulu with some time to kill. Even if you can’t take advantage of the airline’s free stopover policy, you can still make the most of a short layover with our suggestions. Read more
There’s no need to splurge on a luxury beach hotel for this year’s summer vacation, thanks to a wave of relatively new – and affordable – beach hotels. Our favorites span the shores of six countries, boast smart design, prime waterfront real estate, all the conveniences you’d expect from a high-end resort, and, best of all, nightly rates that typically go for less than $300 (and, a few for less than $200!). The cherry on top: Our 10 luxury beach hotels for less are practically brand-new; all but one have opening dates within the past two years! Sprawl out in your own oceanfront suite in Mexico, test out the surf at an all-inclusive Costa Rican gem, or people-watch from your boardwalk-view balcony in Venice Beach, California. Waking up to the sound of crashing waves? Yes, please. Salty sea air and soft sand? Must have. Having extra cash for endless piña coladas served beachside in your private cabana? Well, that’s just smart planning. See our Luxury Beach Hotels for Less Slideshow for a preview of the winning resorts.

Like this hot deal: At the Ilikai Hotel & Suites in Honolulu, Hawaii, stay for at least three nights and pay only $50 for the first night. This three-and-a-half star boutique hotel is in a prime location for sightseeing: the Hawaii Convention Center, Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, USS Arizona Memorial, and Diamond Head State Monument, as well as Waikiki Beach. The Hawaii Five-O special is available for stays through December 31, 2012. To book this package, visit the hotel’s website. If the Ilikai doesn’t suite your taste or budget, check out the other Wakiki hotels who are also doing the Hawaii Five-O package.

The award-winning Colony restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa, located right on the famous shorefront of Waikiki, is inviting guests to express their culinary creativity over dinner. Diners will choose their own spices to flavor their steaks, seafood, or mixed grill dishes – think Hawaiin Red ‘Alaea (a mineral-enriched sea salt), Espresso, and Lemon Pepper. Noting the popularity of semi-DIY culinary consumption (customizable mix-in ice cream at Cold Stone and hibachi-style, cooked-in-your-face food at Benihana), The Colony’s personalized produce is sure to be a hit. At the casual yet elegant restaurant (perfect for a romantic night out), the beautifully prepared dishes are topped off with creative sides like Maui Onions (sweet onions) with Molokai herbs and Okinawan potato puree (purple sweet-potato puree), earning The Colony’s new menu rave reviews, and understandably so – the food sounds scrumptious (and I’m vegetarian).

There seems to be a pattern to the luxury resort scene on the islands of Hawaii. Large, opulently designed facilities perched on expansive, manicured grounds; Lavish patios with large pools and sun bathing acutremants; fancy celebrity chef-run restaurants and lounges; and in-house activities to keep you constantly entertained.
By our standards, and undoubtedly anyone’s, these are amazing features. But sometimes to truly relax, you have to steer clear of the over-developed path, give up a few of the packaged, big ticket amenities, and embrace simplicity.
Luckily at Hotel Renew, Honolulu’s first designer boutique hotel, simplicity does not cancel out luxury.
Beat the winter blues with a Hawaiian getaway – it may be peak season in the Aloha State but there are actually deals to be had! With the Prince Winter Escape special, rooms at Oahu’s Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki start at just $189/night and include a $50 daily resort credit. All units feature views of the ocean, and the lowest priced rooms (included in the package) are actually in the second-tier Oceanfront Vista category, which are on higher floors than standard rooms. Spend the resort credit at any of the hotel’s five restaurants and lounges, golf course, or spa. This deal is valid from January 3, 2010 to March 31, 2010 and there is no minimum stay required. Rack rates normally start at $425/night for the Oceanfront Vista rooms, meaning this package will save you over 50 percent. The hotel also has several other promotions on offer during these dates, so be sure to compare prices for your desired travel dates to ensure the best bang for your buck. Read more

These fortresses of fashion have been derived by either a co-branded, new-concept partnership between the designer and an established hotel brand, or via the redesign of an existing property under their creative control. Of all of the options currently on the rack, we found these 10 runway-ready designer hotels to be the best fit, marrying style and sophistication with extraordinary taste and design sensibility – they’re guaranteed to have a shelf life that will easily outlast yesterday’s catwalk collection. Be sure to see our Designer Hotels Slideshow for glimpses of these hot, haute hotels!
