After the holidays, we tend to get stuck in winter slumps. For many of us, as the temperatures drop and the sun goes down earlier, we’re left counting down the days until spring. But instead of hiding inside all winter, use the post-holiday months as a time to travel somewhere new, whether it’s to a relaxing beach, a ski resort out West, or Walt Disney World. All of the deals below are valid for travel throughout January – just in time to nip those winter blues in the bud.

January is one of the best months to visit Orlando, especially later in the month, when crowds at the theme parks are down after the holidays, and temperatures are in the perfect mid-70s. Hotels follow suit and dip down in pricing, like the 4-star Melia Orlando Suite Hotel, which starts at just $125 per night in January – a 45 percent savings on high season rates. The Melia is the closest all-suite hotel to the Disney Parks, and includes a full kitchen in each unit, plus a 360 -egree infinity pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and complimentary breakfast. Dozens more 4-star Orlando hotels are available for low rates in January, like the Holiday Inn Club Vacations at Orlando – Orange Lake Resort from $80 per night, the Westgate Lakes Resort and Spa from $97 per night, and the Mystic Dunes Resort and Golf Club from $105 per night. Myrtle_Beach_MayFest_DealsWith an eye toward summer, ShermansTravel.com’s Top 10 Family Beaches roundup rightly includes South Carolina’s tranquil Hilton Head and good-naturedly takes a pass on the state’s Myrtle Beach, which in summer is about as untranquil as untranquil gets.

Myrtle Beach likewise gets that its June through August peak season and serenity don’t go together. That’s why the area begins to lure families in May, last year debuting its 1.2-mile boardwalk during the month-long MayFest, which yielded free concerts and deals and promises more of the same next month.

sandcastle-edit.jpgDirect Air just announced that it is adding even more nonstop flights to one of America’s favorite family destinations, Myrtle Beach – and rates start from as little as $99 one-way. Never heard of this Myrtle Beach-based airline? Direct Air’s flights are public charters operated by XTRA Airways, USA Jet, and Vision Airlines – so it’s unlikely that you’ll see it pop up in an airfare search on most major websites. Although Direct Air’s route network and flight schedules aren’t as robust as that of other domestic carriers, its flights are often significantly less pricey.

THE VALUE: Many of these flights take off from smaller hubs that offer a handful of airline options so prices are much higher than major cities. Direct Air’s rates are easily $150-$250 less than competitors, plus you get the luxury of flying nonstop.

THE CATCH: Some flights are seasonal, and baggage charges apply.

THE DETAILS: For more information, check out www.visitdirectair.com.
