Which cruise lines are making headlines this week? Travel journalist Donna Tunney — ShermansTravel’s cruise expert — has all the latest news. Check back every Tuesday for trends, new amenities, and money-saving ideas that help you plan a perfect vacation at sea.
If you know who Lady Mary, Tom Branson, and the Earl of Grantham are, read on. Crystal Cruises has taken the wraps off a two-night, post-cruise trip to the land of Downton, themed after the popular series about early 20th century English aristocrats. It’s an extension of the luxury line’s 17-night cruise departing July 8, 2015 from Reykjavik to London. Cruisers, who will pay $4,600 per person for the land tour (we never said it was cheap), will live like royalty while visiting Highclere Castle, the fictional home of the Grantham clan. They’ll arrive in vintage 1920s cars (chauffeured, of course) and be guests of honor at a private champagne reception and tour, among other Downton-related activities. Cruise fares on this itinerary — which crosses the Arctic Circle on its way to London — start at $1,730 per person if booked by January 2.
In the latest installment of fabulous Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals coming up in the next week, we take a look at under-$100 Caribbean getaways, a 75 percent discount in Panama City, and even a stellar sale for flights to Fiji. Get those credit cards ready…
Are you attracted to cities like a siren? Whether you love popping in and out of museums in the nation’s capitol or romping along neon-studded Las Vegas Boulevard, cities across the U.S. are offering plenty of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals this year. You’ll find discounts as steep as 90 percent off, and rooms as low as $39 per night.
If you’re yearning to flee the coop this winter for a little heat, Apple Vacations wants to help you out. Its Winter Super Sale kicks into effect for select packages in various sunny locales — shaving close to $300 off busy season prices from booking air and hotel separately. The sale encompasses three-, five-, or seven-night trips between December 18, 2014 and April 30, 2015.
Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1 to honor the deceased. The festivities run from October 31 through November 2 and are also observed outside of Mexico in other Latin American countries such as Guatemala and Ecuador — as well as in regions with large Latino populations, such as the U.S. If you haven’t yet had the chance to see the revelry in person, these stunning photos will give you a taste of the lightheartedly macabre celebration.

Now here’s a great idea for newlywed travelers: Rather than asking for home appliances, why not have friends and family contribute to your post-nuptial trip? Princess Cruises‘ Honeymoon Wishes Registry allows others to chip in for everything from cruise fare and shore excursions to specialty dining and drinks by the pool to relaxing spa treatments. All gifts are applied as an onboard credit to the couple’s stateroom account to use during their honeymoon cruise, and the bride and groom can create an accompanying website to share wedding details and personal photos.
Falling temps have you missing the summer? No worries. Occidental Hotels & Resorts is offering a number of tempting all-inclusive fall deals in Mexico. Take those shorts and flip flops back out of the closet!
After the category three Hurricane Odile hit Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas region on September 14 — bringing harsh winds, floods, and structural damage to Baja California — airlines and hotels are finally on the rebound. Los Cabos International Airport finally reopened on October 3, with public transportation and cruise ports also back in operation. While travel lodgings are still somewhat limited, travelers might find some great deals if they’re flexible and willing to do a bit of research.
We thought these airfare deals were too good to pass up, even if there’s only just one day left to book. They expire tomorrow, October 8.

If there’s one responsible thing you do over Labor Day weekend, let it be solidifying your Thanksgiving plans. We know it’s difficult to think ahead to the next big holiday while you’re still working on taking advantage of the current one, but we hear from our friends at Hipmunk that airfare is expected to rise significantly after the holiday. If you don’t already have a destination in mind, consider some of our favorites for Thanksgiving.
As the star of Food Network’s Chopped, and former judge on Bravo’s Top Chef, Ted Allen can eat.
And eat. And eat.
But when he’s not eating, or jamming out to David Bowie, he’s traveling — and currently looking for some vacation suggestions. That said, when he does take off, Ted has reading requirements for boarding a plane and refuses to purchase products from those in-flight magazines. We recently caught up with Ted while eating Thai food, as he, Pepcid, and Eater.com, hosted dinner at Pok Pok NY at its new Brooklyn location.

Your very own plunge pool. A dedicated butler. This kind of beach resort experience must cost an arm and a leg, right?
Not so at Capella Pedregal — at least not if you’re able to take an end-of-summer trip to Cabo San Lucas in the next two months. Now through September 24, an Unforgettable Summer promotion makes rooms at this five-year-old Mexico palace, typically starting at $990, actually within reach. The halved $475 rate isn’t a cheap getaway by any means, but it’s worth the splurge considering all the amenities and perks. As we’ve mentioned, each room has its own private, infinity edge plunge pool, not to mention daily guacamole, chips, and two beers delivered in the afternoons. There’s also a refreshment center constantly stocked with complimentary sodas, juices, and bottled water. Aside from butler service, every guest is treated to WiFi throughout the resort — yes, even in the three giant pools overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Read more
