1. Free Salsa Classes: Mezzanine, Tulum, Mexico

While clocking in 45 minutes of cardio might not sound too appealing on a beach vacation to Mexico’s Riviera Maya, how about a salsa lesson on a beachfront patio? Every Tuesday at 6.15am, a manager leads a group of hotel guests on a run that includes skyline and waterfront views. Along the way, feel free to ask any questions you might have about Chicago. Alternatively, the hotel also offers Barre Bee Fit classes on the 17th floor pool terrace that include a combination of pilates and yoga.

4. Free Yoga on the Beach: The Hotel del Coronado, San Diego

The fitness center at the Hotel del Coronado takes their group fitness classes outdoors seasonally, including morning yoga sessions on the beach. All classes are free for guests and the hotel keeps an updated calendar of options online. Designed to relax the mind while shaping and toning, these yoga sessions with experienced instructors provide a stress-free, healthy start to the day.

5. Free Bike Rentals: The Tribeca Grand, New York City

They’re pretty, blue, and waiting for you at the door of the Tribeca Grand in lower Manhattan. New York City’s bike share program premiered over Memorial Day weekend, with the cost of $9.99 plus tax per bike for 24-hours. But, as a guest at the Tribeca Grand, you can easily explore the cobbled neighborhood – as well as nearby Soho and the West Village – for free. One of the best local areas for a bike ride is the waterside path in Hudson River Park where you won’t have to worry about traffic.

It’s a bit hard to find – as is just about anything in the intentioned labyrinths of Vegas resorts – but the signage, which includes a Nobu Way notation and sleek, amber-lit columns, are good markers for the pocket-sized reception area.

But, don’t expect to rest weary feet here: There’s no actual lobby, just a reception stand that’s sure to get a little crowded at peak hours. But well-dressed staff members are efficient, and friendly, offering bottled water, checking guests in with iPods, and demonstrating how the button-free elevators work. They’re a tad confusing at first but are ultimately pretty cool (one way to know you’re in a property that caters to adults: when elevators don’t have buttons for kid fingers to press).

Designed by renowned architect David Rockwell, rooms are serene and soothing, with deliciously comfortable beds and 55-inch TVs that blend seamlessly into the décor. The spa-like bathrooms are a highlight, featuring teak elements, a black-tile shower, gray stone floor, and deep, egg-shaped white sinks. Plush towels and robes, as well as toiletries by Natura Bissé, offer a luxurious touch, and thoughtful extras include a bath mitt, wooden toothbrush, and take-home, black-and-white slippers so comfy you’ll almost consider trying to make them work on the Strip.

But for purist Nobu fans, the biggest draw of the hotel is the insider access to its eponymous cuisine. Created by Matsuhisa himself, the room service menu is available 24 hours a day, plus, this is the only place where you can savor a Nobu breakfast; green tea waffles and an Asian take on the traditional bagel and lox are popular choices. Guests also get priority access (meaning guaranteed reservations!) to the gorgeous restaurant downstairs, which, at 12,775-square-feet and with 327 seats, and as many as 30 chefs working on busy nights, is the chain’s largest restaurant.

For a brag-worthy view of Vegas, however, Nobu is probably not the best bet. Most rooms look onto a concrete jungle with a limited view of the requisite neon skyline, and though they appear to feature a balcony, there’s actually no way to access the outdoors.

Rates start at an affordable $149/night mid-week and $259/night on weekends. Guests receive VIP access to the popular, on-site nightclub Pure, and for some serious relaxation, the Qua Baths and Spa, about a 10-minute walk through Caesars Palace, has added several Nobu treatments to its menu, starting at $175.

A few minor gripes from my recent visit: I wasn’t offered green tea upon my arrival, which is listed on the website as a welcome gift, and like just about every other property in Vegas, Nobu has opted to add a blasted resort fee (about $28) for access to the pool or to receive wireless internet.

However, one notable perk that leaves a lasting impression is the chance to skip the sometimes serpentine cab line. Upon your checkout, a friendly Nobu employee will wheel your luggage through the casino right to the front of the queue. Which, after a few days in this crazed town, feels like hitting the jackpot indeed.

Llanos del Cortez
If you’re flying to or from Libera airport, or visiting the Guanacaste Province, this almost-hidden, semi-secret waterfall is a must-see. Parking is easily accessible and it’s a short hike to get to this amazing swimming hole with a 66-foot-high waterfall for a quick dip. This is where the locals hang, so it feels very authentic and off-the-beaten-path. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of howler monkeys in the trees above and can chalk it up to one of those “best days ever” on a vacation. No entrance fee, but parking fee varies.

Bajos del Toro
This mammoth of a waterfall is located in a privately owned reserve of Bajos del Toro Amarillo, just a short drive from the El Silenco Lodge and Spa where I had the pleasure of staying. I had the waterfall all to myself, as there was a major storm the day of my visit (they even offered me a refund on the $10 entrance fee!). But the pounding rain didn’t stop my hike down to the dark, deep waters of Bajos del Toro. A warning: The descent is a beast – even for the physically fit – but the mind-blowing views were worth the aching thighs.

La Fortuna
A well-known waterfall, La Fortuna, is the beauty queen among this list. Located just three miles from downtown Arenal, I traveled with a group on horseback and climbed down nearly 1,000 stairs to the bottom for a much-needed dip. The sparkling, chilly pool offers relief from the Costa Rican heat, but be careful of the force from the fall’s 230 feet of powerful rushing waters. You shouldn’t swim in the pool to falls empties into; the waters become a slow-moving lake that’s great for a swim. $8 entrance fee.

La Paz Waterfall Garden
If nature’s your jam, then you’ll want to pay a visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Just a short drive from San Jose, this waterfall-garden-combo is where exotic birds and wildlife live and play among lush greenery and numerous waterfalls (think: frogs, snakes, sloths, jaguars, and creepy crawlies galore). In fact, there are over 100 species of animals hanging out at La Paz. While I steered clear of the creepy crawlies, I loved that the paths where easy for meandering, and with five waterfalls, a cloud and rain forest, this place offered a lot of bang for your buck. $36 entrance fee.

1. PGA National Resort and Spa Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

It’s the stuff of legends. Home to the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic, the PGA National Resort and Spa is steeped in golf history. Boasting signature courses like “The Palmer” and “The Squire” (designed and named after Arnold Palmer and Gene Sarazen, respectively), an on-site Golf Academy offering lessons from certified PGA pros, and a newly renovated golf complex, it’s easy to see why this resort is a favorite among golf buffs. 2. Pinehurst Resort Pinehurst, North Carolina

Currently ranked as the largest golf resort in America, this eight course southern beauty is a favorite among golf enthusiasts. You don’t have to be an avid golfer to appreciate the picturesque scenery that Pinehurst Resort has to offer, but you might as well take advantage of the Father’s Day Golf Package available from June 14–17. For $875 per person, you and dad can enjoy three nights of accommodation, breakfast, one round of golf on Pinehurst No. 4, and one round on Pinehurst No. 2 with a caddie. The package also includes, breakfast, dinner, and receptions during your stay. If you’re not a golfer but still want to treat dad, a $495 non-golfer package is available.

3. Four Seasons Maui at Wailea Maui, Hawaii

A golfer’s paradise, the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea features three premier golf courses set against the natural beauty of Hawaii’s landscape. The Wailea Blue, Gold, and Emerald courses each cater to different abilities and skill level. For those who are looking for a challenge, try your hand at the Gold course. The Blue is straight up, classic golf, while the Emerald course is suited for those who prefer a more leisurely game. Each course offers golf instruction and Yoga for Golfers to ease the mind and relax before or after a round. Reservation and tee time is required to play.

4. St. Andrew’s Fife, Scotland 

The sport of golf has been rooted in Scottish history for the past 600 years, specifically at the Old Course known as St. Andrew’s Links. Today, St. Andrew’s plays host to the British Open. Surprise dad by playing on a piece of history at the largest public golf complex in Europe. The estate itself is surrounded by emerald green rolling hills, so you can gain a perspective of the enormity of the grounds, which includes seven courses, a golf academy and three clubhouses. For £3.00 per person, you can tour the Old Course on a guided 50-minute walk. Tours take place at 11am and 2pm starting at the St Andrews Links Golf Shop. 5. The Royal Melbourne Golf Club Victoria, Australia

Although the club is private and not suitable for beginners, visitors from recognized overseas clubs are allowed to play at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club. The green fee for a round of 18 holes for overseas visitors is $350. The club features two courses, the East Course and the West Course, the latter is ranked number one throughout all of Australia. Large fairways and a lack of any water holes makes Melbourne a challenging course, even for the most adept golfer. The Royal Melbourne Club was also recently chosen to host the World Cup of Golf in November 2013.

6. Leopard Creek Country Club Mpumalanga, South Africa

If you’re looking for a unique golfing experience, look no further than Leopard Creek Country Club. Located on the southern border of the Kruger National Park, this 18-hole golf course is an African retreat. Be careful where you retrieve your ball, though. The club is home to hippos, antelopes, buffalo, and wild boars, as most of the water holes (such as Crocodile River) double as habitats. While Leopard Creek is reserved for members and guests, limited booking is allowed for visitors during the week. For more information, visit the lodging page for times and fees. Feeding and engaging in any activity with the animals is prohibited, as it can be dangerous to their habitat and health.

7. Mission Hills Haikou, China

Mission Hills holds the title of China’s highest rated leisure resort, and according to the Guinness World Records, is also the world’s largest golf club. Comprised of twelve 18-hole courses, three clubhouses and a golf academy, Mission Hills is hard to beat. Even when you’re not on the green, each room at the resort has a private balcony, offering unobstructed views of golf course. Consider the Mission Hills Haikou Holiday Package, which includes a two night stay in a deluxe room with breakfast, three rounds of 18-hole golfing, which covers course insurance, a cart, a caddie, and green and locker fees. The promotional package also includes a spa experience at the Volcanic Mineral Springs, and access to Lava Lagoon for a refreshing swim. Round-trip transportation service between Haikou Meilan International Airport and the Resort is also available. Guests are also offered the option to stay and play at Mission Hills Shenzhen and Dongguan. 8. Crans-sur-Sierre Crans Montana, Switzerland 

High atop a mountain plateau with a view of the Alps sits Crans-Montana, a Swiss resort and golf club with one of the most scenic backgrounds in all of Europe. The golf club Crans-sur-Sierre is closed for half the year due to snowy conditions and reopens from May–October. Summertime is opportune for playing, though. High altitude allows the golfer to drive the ball further than on a regular golf course, and the alpine air is fresh and soothing. Don’t forget to bring your camera to snap a shot of  those periwinkle Alps. Visit the website for more information on fees, as prices for 9-hole and 18-hole vary from season to season.

9. Verdura Golf and Spa Resort Sicily, Italy

Located near the seaside town of Sciacca along the southern coast of Sicily, the Verdura Golf and Spa resort is a Mediterranean gem. Each room at the resort overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and has been decorated to reflect luxurious elegance. There are two championship golf courses on site, The East and The West, and both charge different fees for residents and non-residents, depending on the course and the season. The resort’s new Endless Privileges program for guests is designed to enhance the golfing experience. Complete with daily green fees, benefits include three meals, a complimentary shoe and club cleaning, and a bag of goodies containing a golf cap, engraved Verdura bag tag, and golf book and tee pack. Dad can even play among the pros on the 2012 Sicilian Open Championship Course. A duo of hot spring retreats here beckon visitors with an atmosphere all their own. At the Termales Santa Rosa de Cabal Hotel, visitors can soak underneath cascading hot waters as they pour from a mountainside. Once things heat up, cool down at the other end of the springs, where a bigger, cold waterfall offers an instant cool-down session; a couple of thermal pools at different temperatures link the two chutes. Changing rooms, a bar and cafeteria, spa, and bathrooms are available to visitors; but skip the over-priced on-site hotel. We came in the evening (the pools stay open until close to midnight) and were rewarded with fewer crowds and cooler temps for a more refreshing dip – plus, streaming salsa music for some only-in-Latin America flair ($22/adults, $11/kids).

Nearby, a small hike alongside the lush banks of a babbling brook leads to the Termales Santa Rose de Cabal Balneario, overseen by one of the loveliest waterfalls you’re likely to come across the world over (pictured above). Here, the scenery of cloud forest greenery makes the trip worth it in and of itself, though, of course, the numerous thermal pools, spa, and bar/cafeteria are a nice added touch. (Tip: Avoid going on weekends or school holidays, when the peace is interrupted as the pools are overrun with rambunctious kids and their seemingly oblivious – and possibly drunk – parents; $17/adults, $8.50/kids).

Keep in mind that this destination is refreshingly “gringo”-free, and caters largely to a domestic, Spanish-speaking audience – the international guidebooks have yet to find their way to this hidden Colombian Eden (in all fairness, a decade ago, this place was still rife with guerrilla activity, which has long since disappeared). Basic Spanish or at least a Spanish phrasebook will work wonders in ensuring you make your way around with relative ease.

The one exception was the great-value Matisses Hotel Campestre (pictured to right), with its refreshingly efficient English-speaking hosts, a charming husband-and-wife team from the area, who spent time living in the States. Opened just over three years ago, the hotel is set on perfectly manicured grounds (formerly farmland), with a pond, kids’ play area (with trampoline), pool, Jacuzzi, and bar/breakfast room, all with sweeping views over the surrounding mountains. The best part is that it’s set just 10 minutes from the thermal springs. Oh yeah, and two adorable dogs make for great companions while there. A dozen rooms offer comfortable beds, reliably hot showers, and private balconies or patios. Rates start from $82/night, including breakfast and a 10 percent discount on admission to the thermal springs.

Access to Santa Rosa de Cabal is via Cali (a 3-hour drive), Medellin (a 5-hour drive), or, via the airport in Pereira (the Matecaña Airport is 30 minutes away), which receives regular, inexpensive flights from Bogotá (we found flights from around $160 round-trip).

How to Get There:
Charming Porter Airlines flies into Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, a small airport on an island at the city’s edge. A quick ferry ride brings you straight into the city, minimizing travel time (alternatively, Toronto Pearson International Airport is located 14 miles northwest of Downtown Toronto). In other words, half an hour after you’ve picked up your bags, you can check into your hotel and head out for a stroll! Where to Hit the Streets:
Several neighborhoods in Toronto are worthy of an afternoon of exploring on foot, but Queen West is packed with of-the-moment attractions. There are a couple boutique hotels – Drake Hotel and Gladstone Hotel – that are a good match for design-conscious travelers as well as opportunities to engage in the local art scene, including the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA). This cool neighborhood also has plenty of enticing sidewalk cafes and watering holes for people watching.

Where to Eat:
If grazing is your preferred method of eating, spend the lunchtime hours wandering through the St. Lawrence Market. The space has housed markets since 1803, and today’s covered market hall attracts locals shopping for everything from meat, to fish, and fresh produce. Amongst the stalls are ready-to-eat options including sandwiches for nibbling, cheeses for sampling, honey for tasting, and plenty of sweets to round out your meal. Where to Get Outdoors:
The spirit of forward movement in Toronto might best be summed up by Evergreen Brick Works, a once abandoned brick factory turned environmentally friendly community center. A charity called Evergreen reclaimed the former industrial site with an eye on urban sustainability and planned a variety of activities from a Saturday morning farmer’s market to a Children’s Garden where kids can get their hands dirty. The site is surrounded by miles of hiking trails, perfect for a picnic on a sunny day (pick up supplies at the in-house restaurant, Café Belong).

Where to Relax:
The brand new Four Seasons Toronto in Yorkville is home to an impressive 30,000 square foot spa on the 9th floor. It’s is the largest day spa in the city, with a sunny indoor pool and outdoor terrace overlooking the Toronto skyline. Huge locker rooms with plush lounge areas and 17 treatment rooms provide an opportunity for some well-deserved pampering. Treat yourself to a massage and personalize the experience by selecting everything from music to aromas. Though it is a splurge (massages start at $110), it is well worth it in this impressive space.

Where to Drink:
It is fitting that the former Whiskey Distillery District in Toronto is now a pedestrian-only place for an afternoon cocktail. This labyrinth of red brick Victorian buildings and cobblestone streets dates back to 1832. The art galleries and shops are worthy of exploration, but for those looking to kick back with a drink, you can choose between a revitalizing hot chocolate at Soma Chocolate or a craft beer at the Mill Street Brewpub, among others.

1. Relax in the sauna

Many hotels have spa facilities on-site (or even a gym with a free sauna), but if yours doesn’t, the concierge can point you in the direction of a great one. Book an afternoon in the sauna to clear up your sinuses. The steam will give you a sense of rejuvenation (as well as help you breathe, which is always good).

2. Get a massage

The aches and pains of being sick can be assuaged with some therapeutic relief. Whether your technique of choice is a Swedish massage, aromatherapy, or a deep tissue rub, some well-deserved pampering can squash your symptoms and help you enjoy your trip.

3. Take a bus tour

If you want to explore a new city, but don’t want to risk wandering around unknown neighborhoods in a fugue state, take a bus tour. You don’t have to do anything and you can still see your vacation destination. Many run under a few hours, which means you’ll be able to snap some photos before the cough syrup wears off. If you’re worried the exhaust or stop-and-go traffic will upset your already-queasy stomach, look for a tour that offers a “hop on, hop off” option. Take a break at a landmark, or jump on the next ride back to the hotel.

4. Go parasailing

Alright, so strapping yourself into a harness and being hoisted through the air isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think ‘non-invasive vacation activities,’ but parasailing is a fairly low-maintenance choice. Plus, it shouldn’t occupy more than an hour or so of your time. There’s something very freeing (and hopefully nasal-passage-opening) about soaring hundreds of feet over the ocean. Plus, there’s always the chance the spray of salt water will clear up your sore throat on the ride back to shore.

5. Make a home away from home

Unfortunately, there are going to be some ailments that require more than cough drops and willpower to recover from. Forcing yourself out to have fun while sick can prove more miserable than the illness itself. To salvage your trip, your best bet might be to seek out the comforts of home. Order chicken soup from room service, or rent your favorite movie on pay-per-view. It may not wind up being your best vacation yet, but at least you’ll be able to return healthy, rested, and relaxed – and isn’t that the least we can hope for from a vacation anyway?
