I got an early look at the summer forecast that Bing Travel (www.bing.com/travel) is releasing tomorrow and the bad news likely won’t shock deal seekers: Overall, hotel rates and airfares will be higher than they were last summer.
Expect summer domestic airfares to claw skyward by about 15 percent per round-trip ticket, averaging $561, up from about $485 last year. Likewise, the study reveals that round-trip overseas airfares will average $1,250, up from about $1,100 the same time last summer.
That said, Bing’s summer travel forecast yields some good news, too, for destinations that happen to be quite family friendly.

Travel as a vehicle for spiritual transformation is hardly a new notion – seekers have practiced the act of pilgrimage for as long as they’ve looked up to the skies and attempted communion with a higher power. Even in today’s short-attention-span society, setting out to honor the divine or ponder the mysterious is a time-honored tradition that refuses to wane with the changing tides of our technologically driven lives. This list of 10 sacred places (and the accompanying slideshow) showcases points of perceived power and peace around the globe, where the physical appears to meld seamlessly with the metaphysical whether due to awe-inspiring natural settings, reported ties to great gods or holy humans, or long-standing consecration as sites of worship and ritual.
Our list isn’t meant to be comprehensive. Sacred places mean many things to different people – zipping along an open highway, sailing a calm sea, or even hibernating inside on a cold winter’s morning can all bring about their own sort of peace. Where do you go to retreat from the world?

You don’t go to Cancun for authentic Mexican experiences. You go there for a tan. And the beach. And as I learned this past New Year’s Eve, when the ME Cancun switched over from à la carte to all-inclusive at the stroke of midnight, boozing on said beach and getting said tan while totally forgetting you ever owned a wallet. Ahh… January is made for vacations like this!
If the thought of submitting to the moored cruise ship experience that many all-inclusive options can come to feel like, think differently: the IGLTA-certified resort’s new “Complete ME” package has all the typical benefits of an all-inclusive experience – free drinks, unlimited dining in one of 4 restaurants (Pan-Asian, Mexican, Mediterranean, Argentinian grill) – without the drawbacks of marauding hordes of children ruining the pools and non-guests being excluded from the property. Indeed the adults-only pool areas and beachfront palapas and day beds were occupied as much by Mexican locals enjoying the holiday over several bottles of à la carte Grey Goose as they were by wrist-banded vacationers turning toasty shades of pink. Think of it as a more permeable beach club with benefits than a lock down compound – an industry first in this market. Read more
Those on the lookout for an affordable tropical getaway this winter might want to consider the brand-new Villa Del Palmar Cancun, opening this Christmas Eve. At the beachfront property in Playa Mujeres (25 minutes north of Cancun), all 150 rooms and suites feature superb ocean views, not to mention private balconies, kitchenettes, and spa tubs.
Also on offer are two swimming pools (one for adults only) with a pool butler, four hot tubs, and two poolside spa huts. Two restaurants serve Mexican and international cuisine, with sushi available at an outdoor lounge in the evenings; a beach bar will open in February 2011. A shuttle service provides transfers to Cancun’s downtown and the hotel zone.
Southwest Airlines has announced the upcoming debut of its “International Connect” system in partnership with Mexico’s Volaris Airlines – passengers can now book flights on the two separate airlines and coordinate baggage transfers all through Southwest’s website. Southwest has also launched a bilingual call center with international customer service representatives on hand to facilitate travel on the new service. International Connect flights feature service to five sites, including Guadalajara, Morelia, Zacatecas, Cancun, and Mexico City – they can be booked in association with Southwest flights via the Los Angeles, Oakland, or San Jose airports for travel beginning December 1.
