Staying in New York City isn’t cheap. But if you’re willing to expand your hotel search to the outer boroughs, you could find more affordable prices — and cooler vibes.
Case in point: Hotel RL, a new hotel by Red Lion, is opening in the heart of the Bed-Stuy neighborhood, and there are some great deals for early birds who want to stay at the property first.
Rates start as low as $129 per night — already a good deal for New York — but if you download the Hello Rewards app, (which helps you organize trips and book hotel stays) you can save even more. You’ll get 30 percent off your total, (bringing the rate to $90 a night), and you’ll earn triple stay credits and a free cocktail at the hotel’s bar.
Check out the hotel’s web site for additional discounts, like 15 percent off three nights; 20 percent off five nights; or 20 percent off when you book two weeks in advance and pre-pay your stay. To get the advance booking discount, use the rate code ADVANCE when booking online.
So why Bed-Stuy? While this neighborhood doesn’t have the arty, upscale status of neighboring Williamsburg, Bed-Stuy is a quintessential Brooklyn neighborhood. With beautifully preserved brownstones, rich African American and Caribbean history, and an ever-growing array of trendy bars and shops, there is much to see and do here. Bed-Stuy also is central in the debate over gentrification and affordability in New York City — and you’ll see evidence of that everywhere during your stay, including in your shiny new hotel.
The RL is a new concept from Red Lion hotels, a chain of affordable hotels with traditional decor. The RL in Brooklyn, as a contrast, feels more like the hip surrounding neighborhood. You can even do some good during your stay: the hotel launched an initiative called Project Wake Up Call to help stop homelessness.
