Hotel lobbies have come a long way in recent years. From perfunctory places to check-in and check-out to happening hangouts where guests can eat, drink, and mingle. The Ace New York and the London Edition are two notable hotels that have put a premium on socializing in the lobby. Thanks to their upscale bar offerings and generous seating areas, these hotels have become the go-to spots in their cities for meetings, meet-up, and even, meet-cutes.

Now, the 14th floor sky lobby at the just-opened Hotel Indigo on New York City’s Lower East Side (rates averaging $250 per night) has elevated the hotel lobby experience even further, combining modern comforts with ebullient artwork, and stunning views of Manhattan. In short, you’ll really want to spend some time here, even if you aren’t spending the night.

Anchored by a trio of columns that give it a loft-like feel, the lobby has giant floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around nearly the entire room, giving unobstructed views of Brooklyn all the way up to the Empire State Building.

A pair of oversized red L-shaped couches, each paired with stacked coffee tables and vintage-inspired reading lights, make for comfortable perches to take in the skyline. In front of the elevator bank, there’s more seating in the form of elongated, two-toned, leather banquettes that are flanked by several high-backed orange chairs with funky steel arms.

After taking in the views, guests can take in the ceiling mural by famous LES graffiti artist Lee Quiñones. His custom creation for the hotel features a map of the neighborhood with oversized polaroid snaps of the eccentric personalities who inhabited the LES.

Beyond the views and the art, the Hotel Indigo lobby offers free WiFi and plenty of charging stations as well as a communal table for working. Pressed juices from Liqueteria and pastries from the Melt Bakery can be had at the Mr. Purple cafe, just steps from the seating area. And when you’re ready for an al fresco view of Manhattan, head one floor up to the Mr. Purple rooftop lounge where a pool, lounge, and bar await.
