Here’s a quick look at what’s new this week in cruising, and how it could impact your next trip.

  • Silversea's passengers will no doubt go ape over renowned scientist and conservationist Biruté Mary Galdikas, who is lecturing on the 120-passenger Silver Discoverer in October. Galdikas is famous for her studies of orangutans at Camp Leakey in Borneo, one of the stops on the 11-day expedition from Balikpapan to Singapore.

  • In a big victory for Carnival Corporation, its social-impact cruise line Fathom, and really all travelers, Cuba agreed -- at the cruise company's urging -- to eliminate an old law prohibiting Cuban-born passengers from visiting the island. Now, Fathom's 704-passenger MV Adonia will make history when it sets sail from Miami to Cuba on May 1. Meanwhile, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings says to stay tuned for announcements regarding Cuba cruises on its three brands, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises (negotiations are underway). Bottom line: Cuba is hot and getting hotter.

  • Families with kids will soon be zip lining through the Black Forest with Disney. Adventures by Disney is doubling its number of all-inclusive European river cruises next year to 14, and adding the legendary Rhine. The family friendly sailings debut on the Danube this July on specially built AmaWaterways ships. Family friendly programming also includes the opportunity to bike in every port.

  • Speaking of zip lining, fans will find the longest zip line at sea aboard the 4,140-passenger MSC Seaside -- the latest release from Miami-based MSC Cruises -- when it launches from Miami in December 2017. How long is long? You can fly 425 feet across the length of the ship.

  • All-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises has a nifty new perk for the posh set launching in 2017 -- free Business Class air.
