Here’s a quick look at what’s new this week in cruising, and how it could impact your next trip.

• The MV Adonia, operated by Carnival Corporation’s Fathom brand, sailed from Miami to Havana this week making history as the first ship to travel the route in decades. The 704 passengers on board can consider themselves pioneers of sorts. But Fathom won't be the only American brand doing the route for long. Among those in hot pursuit is Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings, with its three brands.

 

• The newest ship in the Oceania Cruises fleet, the 684-passenger Sirena, is an oldie but a goodie: the ship was built in 1999, but it is sparkling thanks to a recent $50 million renovation. The R-class vessel was re-christened in Barcelona with Claudine Pépin, the daughter of French chef and PBS TV star Jacques Pépin, serving as godmother (Jacques was also in attendance). And yes, food is definitely a focus on board, with two new specialty restaurants, Red Ginger and Tuscan Steak.

 

• Break out the bell-bottoms -- a 2017 Flower Power Cruise sets sail next February. Acts on board the five-day Caribbean cruise on Celebrity Summit include Eric Burdon and The Animals, Micky Dolenz (of The Monkees!), The Fifth Dimension, The Family Stone, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Three Dog Night, the Yardbirds, and Vanilla Fudge. The trip is sure to be a groovy nostalgia fest.

 

• Bike the longest dedicated bike path in Europe between Passau, Germany and Budapest on a new active river cruise itinerary launching in September. Uniworld is providing the ship (the River Beatrice) and premier active company Butterfield & Robinson is providing the bikes and tour guides. Guests will enjoy cocktails and German Riesling during the breaks.

 

• Got $50K and a few months to spare? Book the debut, 141-day world cruise on Viking Ocean Cruise's 930-passenger Viking Sun, which will be fresh from the shipyard when it departs Miami on December 15, 2017. Along the way, it will stop at 66 ports in 35 countries on five continents, with overnights in places including Havana, Hong Kong, and Sydney.
