I just received the info packet for Star Trek: The Cruise, departing in January from Miami. The first official cruise themed after the science-fiction franchise will be hosted by William Shatner and will include a Starfleet's Intergalactic Gala (What to wear?!).

I am hardly the only geek hitting the high seas, though. The 2017 Trekkie sailing is already sold out, and two more Star Trek cruises will follow in 2018, this time hosted by George Takei (Sulu).

And Star Trek is just the latest of several themed cruises that seem to be designed for nerds. Cult-like franchises are taking over the cruise world lately. Here are three others on our radar.

1. Impractical Jokers Cruise

Set sail for four days of public pranks and laughs on the second annual Impractical Jokers Cruise. The cast of the eponymous truTV show will be onboard, along with Joseph "Joe" Gatto, James "Murr" Murray, Brian "Q" Quinn, and Salvatore "Sal" Vulcan (aka: The Tenderloins Comedy Troupe), and other comedians and live bands. The sailing embarks for Mexico from New Orleans on November 1, 2017.

2. Bright Horizons

Get serious about science on a Bright Horizons cruise with Scientific American magazine. The one-week sailing on Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America in Hawaii, beginning January 7, features noted experts on both the Hubble Telescope and dinosaurs.

3. International World Space Week

Talk space and do some stargazing on the Queen Mary 2 on a transatlantic cruise from New York next October. The International World Space Week sailing will host experts of the stars, such as NASA astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman and Stephen Attenborough, the commercial director of Virgin Galactic. The Cunard flagship is home to the only planetarium at sea.
