While most of us have a tried-and-true handbag for everyday use, it’s tough to find the perfect travel bag. A tote for the road has a different set of requirements: It needs to be functional, yet fashionable and lightweight with plenty of pockets. Here, five carryalls that deliver style and practicality but don’t scream “backpacker.”
How Does She Do It tote by Stella & Dot, $89
The navy and white stripes on this tote give it a playful, nautical look that’s perfect for seaside getaways. Beyond the stripes, this bag is packed with practical features. It is lightweight and water resistant, with an outside pocket that offers handy access to small items. But what sold us is the interior. The citron lining is cheerful, and the tote contains separate pockets for your smartphone and water bottle. The sides of the tote can also be snapped together to shrink it down.
The Day Tripper by Birdling Bags, $105
This two-year-old company was launched by best friends (and mothers) who wanted chic carryalls that would make family travel a breeze. The result: sturdy materials and plenty of compartments. One of our favorites is the Day Tripper, a roomy canvas tote that comes with a huge, removable zippered pouch. The bag also comes with an optional crossbody strap and exterior pockets that are perfect for stashing water bottles or flip flops.
Baggallini Horizon Cross Body, $68
We love the simplicity of the lightweight, nylon Horizon crossbody from travel-favorite Baggallini. The bag’s roomy exterior and zippered pockets keep phones or subway passes at hand, and the interior is packed with credit card slots, an additional zippered pocket, a pen holder, and a removable pouch.
Cee Cee and Ryan Stef bag, $98
Here’s a secret: Diaper bags are one of the best options for a tote, even if you don’t have kids. The material is always wipeable and these bags contain oodles of pockets — just remember to throw out the changing pad. The Stef by Cee Cee and Ryan contains 12 interior pockets for ultimate organization, along with six exterior pockets. An optional crossbody strap allows you to be hands-free.
Travelon Anti-Theft Clutch Crossbody, $50
This sleek little bag is big on features. The crossbody by Travelon can be worn as a clutch and is dressy enough for an evening out, but it’s packed with anti-theft technology. The strap and body panels cannot be slashed, and it contains RFID blocking credit card slots, as well as locking hardware.
