The newly built Westin Jekyll Island is situated on a stretch of Georgia’s perfectly picturesque coastline, making it feel like it's a secret hideaway -- one with rich history, to boot. Here's what we thought of the brand-new hotel, just an hour's drive from Jacksonville, Florida.
Best Feature: It's a tie between the beach and surrounding history. The hotel offers direct access to the beach, and we think it's worth splurging on a room with a balcony for the stunning ocean views. But, once you've had your fill of the scenery, there's the historical aspect of this property to admire: Jekyll Island was a winter playground for the 19th and early 20th century American elite, including families such as the Rockefellers, Morgans, and Pulitzers. During the warm months, you can take a bike tour of their summer cottages when you're not lounging in the sun.The Rooms: Here, 187 guest rooms and 13 suites -- most offering oversized balconies -- are outfitted with the signature Westin Heavenly Bed (it features a whopping 10 layers) and Heavenly Bath products (featuring white tea aloe to help you further unwind). After a day on the beach, there’s nothing better than a rain shower and sinking into cloud-like comfort.
The Food: The SuperFoodsRx menu is all about eating healthfully while traveling, packed with powerhouse ingredients that are not only good for you, but that taste delicious, too. We started our day with a kale, spinach, banana, mango, and cinnamon smoothie and ended with quinoa paella.
Who Will Love It: Health- and fitness-minded travelers will feel quite comfy here, as the property is part of Westin's newly launched Wellness Escapes program. You can play well at the pool, move well in the fitness center, and even borrow a pair of New Balance sneakers and workout gear to keep fit on the road. Business travelers will also appreciate the 5,000-plus square feet of meeting space and the ultra-modern technology of the Tangent at Westin workspace (think: seamless digital sharing, complimentary internet, flexible outlets, and more).
Who Might Not: Bed-and-breakfast types may want to head to a more old-school property on the island.
