Scoring a Manhattan hotel room that’s comfy and chic for under $250 has long been a stiff challenge. But a package from the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel recently reminded us of two good strategies: Visit around — but not on — holiday weekends, and think ahead.
The Art Deco property near midtown’s Penn Station is offering an Empire State package that includes two passes to the Empire State Building’s 102nd floor Observation Deck (a $92 value) and continental breakfast in the hotel’s 39th floor Sky Lounge. That’s in addition to the amenities that have come out of a major five-year renovation, like free WiFi, flatscreen televisions, and serious celebrity cred — the likes of Jennifer Hudson and the late President John F. Kennedy have stayed here. Onsite are two restaurants: Tick Tock Diner serves breakfast 24 hours a day, and Cooper’s Tavern dishes up all-you-can-eat PEI mussels, plus steaks and oysters, for dinner.
Getting back to our deals strategy, starting weekend rates for the package spike as high as $344-$469 a night through the rest of this year, which aren’t ideal. But if you look ahead into 2015, rates start from $199 on weekends in January and $219 in February. (Though the website states that the package is available through December 29, 2014, we’ve confirmed that it’s bookable for these months as well.)
If you’re keen on visiting this fall and winter, many big city hotels lower their rates between Thanksgiving and Christmas. At the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel specifically, the weekend before Thanksgiving as well as the weekend before Christmas offer rooms for $269-$284 a night. During weeknights on the week of Christmas, you can even expect nice $229 rates.
