SATA Airlines and its parent group have been bringing travelers to the volcanic Azorean Islands, just off of Portugal, for nearly 70 years. Looking ahead to winter, the airline is now offering a special rate for round-trip flights between Boston and Sao Miguel — where travelers can enjoy thermal baths, pineapple greenhouse visits, whale watching, and a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration with live music and fireworks by the harbor. Now through this Thursday, July 31, travelers can nab tickets for as low as $499 round-trip, for the itinerary departing December 30 and returning January 6, 2015*.
Compare that to other flights between the two cities around that time, typically clocking in at just under $1,000 round-trip — or other flights between Boston and other nearby Azorean Islands that cost over $1,300. Essentially, the flights are a good 50 percent off, at least. To sweeten the deal, the promo fare is the same for the typically cheapest “light” and slightly higher “smart” tickets, the main difference being that the latter covers one checked bag (weight limit is 23 kg, or 50.7 lb).
Another option in coach are the “value” tickets, with two checked bags and refunds with penalties, which are $732.46 in this promotion. For an upgrade, “executive” tickets cover two checked bags at 32 kg and allows changes or cancellations without penalty, in addition to lounge access, for $1,728.46.
*SATA is advertising the discount rate between these two dates, but we were able to find other dates earlier in December and later in January at the same price. So if there’s flexibility in your schedule, it doesn’t hurt to plug in a few alternatives.
