stractahotelThe northern lights, winter attractions, package deals, and ways to save in the capital; we have quite thoroughly laid out some of the best reasons to visit Iceland. Now, here is a new hotel chain that will open up your options once you’ve booked your ticket.

Stracta Hotels are led by the father and son team of Hreiðar Hermannsson and Hermann Hreiðarsson (who just happens to be a professional soccer player). The team realized that hotel accommodation is scarce in some of the wilder, more remote areas of Iceland, meaning that most visitors would have to miss out on them entirely, or spend too much time and money getting to them.

The first Stracta Hotel opened recently in Hella, 60 miles southeast of Reykjavík, close to attractions including the Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull volcanoes and Þórsmörk mountain. As well as standard room types, which feature minimalist, Nordic-style design, the hotel offers small cottages with cooking facilities and deluxe suites. WiFi is free throughout the property. The hotel’s location offers easy access to horse riding, hiking, and hot springs and, come winter, it will be a great place for viewing the northern lights from its outdoor hot tubs and sauna.

Best of all, given that Iceland is a country where hotel accommodation prices can be prohibitive, September rates at the Stracta Hotel start at just $101 per night for a standard double room. In the dark days of winter, those rates go down to $94 per night.
