Vacation rentals are quickly growing in popularity. The savviest travelers have been booking them for years, but everyone else is starting to take notice – and for a good reason: they’re a great way to save money and help you be more independent on your trips. Many travelers who are booking vacation rental properties for the first time, however, may have questions about what to expect when they book – especially if they’re used to hotels.
We spoke with Bob Milne, President of Wyndham Vacation Rentals North America, who answered some common questions about vacation rentals:
Lisa Hubner: Are vacation rentals mostly good for families and big groups? That’s often what we see.
Bob Milne: The vacation rental experience really appeals to a wide variety of travelers, all of whom appreciate the conveniences of home while they’re on vacation. Whether it’s a family looking for the cost savings of a rental, or executives wanting to hold a corporate retreat, this is a natural fit for many people, especially groups. But many couples and smaller traveling parties find the space and convenience of a vacation rental stay just as appealing.
LH: Which destinations are ideal for a vacation rental experience?
BM: In North America, beach, ski, mountain, theme park, golf, and tennis resort destinations are popular spots for vacation rentals. Abroad, guests can choose from traditional experiences in cottages, private homes, and condos. But there are also more unique stays in house boats, castles, and tents throughout some of Europe’s most popular destinations.
LH: What are some of the advantages of booking a vacation rental over a hotel?
BM: With a vacation rental, you get the convenience of home-like amenities, like as a kitchen, or a washer and dryer. Access to a kitchen alone can mean a significant savings on meals, even with eating just one meal a day in the rental. More space is another advantage of a vacation rental, which offers an average of 1,850 square feet, versus the average 325 square feet you’d get in a hotel.
LH: What amenities and services can a guest expect in a vacation rental?
BM: Many of our rentals that include housekeeping, concierge services, spa and fitness centers, free Wi-Fi, and complimentary shuttles. Guests can relax in their home away from home enhanced with the service of a hotel. Should guests have any questions or concerns during their stay, they can call the regional point of contact that’s listed in their check-in packets. And our Vacation Rental Bill of Rights established standards and lets our guests know we’re there to ensure they have a great experience.
