This year Eurail added Turkey to its list of European countries covered by its Global Pass. That means the pass now covers travel in 24 different countries – from Norway to Portugal to Bulgaria. Imagine lugging around paper timetables for all of those.

If you're planning to ride the European rails, with a pass or without, a free app called Rail Planner lets you ditch the bulky timetables and find schedule information on your mobile device. You don't even have to worry about roaming charges because the app works offline. (The only thing you can't do offline is make changes to your tickets.) The app also features detailed city and country maps, so you can do a little research while en route. It can also help you find the nearest train station, and lets you view special offers for discounts at museums and hotels.

An added bonus? Eurail is currently running a winter special and offering 20 percent off Global Pass prices for travel before March 31, 2014.  A 10-day pass usually starts at $617, but you can get it on sale for $495.
