Inspired Travel: Plitvice Lakes National Park

April 23, 2013 by

Plitvice Lakes National ParkCroatia is becoming a very hot vacation destination, so why not brush up on it’s most popular tourist destination – Plitvice Lakes National Park? The national park (the first of its kind in Croatia) was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1979. The main draw of the park are its 16 lakes that are connected by a series of waterfalls and incredible caves. The surrounding area is known for its mixed wildlife, including bears, deer, wolves, boar, and rare birds.

Plitvice Lakes National ParkThe lakes cover nearly five miles of the park’s landscape, while all together the National Park occupies over 180 square miles. The park is open year-round which means you can witness the amazing beauty of the lakes freezing over in the winter wonderland.

Plitvice Lakes National ParkWhile the park is open all year, the website says that spring is the best season to visit. Explore on your own by hiking around, take a boat across the largest lake, or, if you’d like, you can pay a little extra (on top of the entrance fee) for a guide to show you the best vistas and areas in the park.
