The approach of the holiday season brings to mind lots of cozy things: hot chocolate, fireplaces, watching the snow fall as evergreen-scented candles fill the air. But for the thousands of people in the Northeast displaced or severely affected by Hurricane Sandy, the holiday season threatens to be much less comfortable than usual. As you think of where you might travel this holiday season, we urge you to consider offers that not only cost you less but also give back to those who have recently lost so much.
The Cape Resorts Group, which includes hotels on the hard-hit Jersey Shore, is offering a “For Jersey, For Shore” program throughout the month of November. Stay at any of the group’s four resorts in Cape May – like the 4-star Virginia Hotel from $109 per night and the beachfront Congress Hall from $99 per night – and 4% of your total reservation price goes directly to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund (the same promotion also applies to gift card purchases). Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday (November 23-26), the donations will double to 8% on all reservations and gift card purchases, which you can apply to future stays in Cape May, supporting the local community while enjoying this always-charming resort town, considered the oldest seaside resort town in the country.
Many hotels are making donations directly to the American Red Cross with every room reservation, like Affinia Hotels, which have properties in both New York City and Washington, D.C.. They’re offering a “Warm & Fuzzy” package through February 28, 2013, including a bottle of wine, a “winter rescue kit,” and a $10 donation to the Red Cross with every reservation. Rooms at the Liaison Capitol Hill start from $114 per night, and all New York properties (five to choose from) start from $274 per night – both cities top destinations for the holiday season. Escape somewhere warm like the Westin Resort & Casino, Aruba, which offers rooms from $169 per night through December 16 and $299 in January through March, and donates a generous $20 per day to the Red Cross with each reservation. Or, book any hotel through the flash hotel deal site, TripAlertz.com, and they’ll donate $5 to the Red Cross with each hotel purchase.
Those of you that are preferred members with groups like the Starwood, Hilton, and Marriott Hotels can also choose to donate your hotel points to the American Red Cross. An even simpler way to help? Text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross, or visit their website for even more ways to give.
