Cheyenne Mountain ResortApril’s arrival signals the last gasps of ski season in Colorado. That doesn’t mean the state’s closing for business, especially in Pikes Peak foothills favorite Colorado Springs, home of Cheyenne Mountain Resort (www.cheyennemountain.com), which is wrapping up a $20 million renovation this week and tempting families through May 15 with its Spring Fling Family Getaway, a deal yielding solid amenities and room rates starting at $139.

The deal permits kids 8 and younger to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner for free at the Mountain View Restaurant – literally named, so angle for a window table. A free large pizza with free soda is also provided during your stay, and you can work that off with indoor tennis or golf, free after 2pm for kids older than 12 accompanied by a paying adult.

The package also includes a half-off adult admission coupon for the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and the hotel confirmed that if you have more than one adult in your party you can pick up additional 50 percent off zoo coupons at the front desk.

Other notable amenities, available to all guests, are a kids’ splash park, kiddie pool, and playground. And within the Will Rogers lounge you can sidle up to foosball and pool tables as well as something that will make your kids apoplectically happy regardless of whether they already have one at home –  a Wii.

The resort also runs a “kidz” club that divvies children up into age-appropriate groups; rates vary by length of session and time of day. And if you’re determined to ditch your kids for an entire day of your stay (not that there’s anything wrong with that) a mere $70 will cover childcare from 8am to 5pm, as well as the cost of lunch and a snack.

Beyond the zoo you’ll have your pick of such natural attractions as the Cave of the Winds and Garden of the Gods, but let’s face it, obligatory is the cog railway ride ($34 adults, $18.50 kids ages 3 to 12) to the summit of Pike’s Peak. If you’re looking for your muse, it was up here that Katharine Lee Bates found hers, as she was inspired to write the words to “America the Beautiful” after a visit to the top.
