Finding Monkeys (and Deals) at Four Seasons Costa Rica

Let’s say you want a warm-weather resort with all the standards: beaches, spa, assorted pools, water sports, tennis, golf. There are a lot to choose from. But now let’s say you also don’t want to travel far, and there have to be monkeys.

Lots of them. And coatis, parrots and deer. And nearby volcanic ranges. And deep-soaking tubs in the rooms and suites, with twice-daily housekeeping so you’ll never want for a towel or L’Occitane soap. Now the choice is the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica, sprawled across 99 acres of the 2,135-acre Peninsula Papagayo, in Guanacaste, on the Pacific coast.

But let’s say you still want more. Then how about the first grass tennis court of any Four Seasons (debuting in late December, beside the existing four Har-Tru courts) or miniature golf beside the driving range, with nighttime play with glow-in-the-dark balls? Or how about a slew of packages, ranging from a fifth night free with four-night stays in rooms or suites (for a discounted rate of $316 per night), or the sixth and seventh nights free when booking one of the 31 private villas? Tennis, golf, and spa promotions, as well as dining credits, also apply. But the biggest romance enhancer/sweetener (in a land of pineapples and sugarcane, no less!) is 50 percent off second rooms booked for children 18 years and younger. A summer camp, debuting in 2012 at the family-friendly resort, is also in the works.

Just 40 minutes by car from Liberia (where a new $41-million airport terminal is soon to open), Central America’s only Four Seasons now benefits from direct flights from New York, Newark, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, and Minneapolis (starting in January). To make things even easier, the new terminal will also host a dedicated Four Seasons office, so you can focus on relaxing as soon as you land. Or on the howler and capuchin monkeys. Or maybe even on the three-toed sloths. www.fourseasons.com/costarica
