Massachusetts redefined what ye ol’ ball and chain could mean when it legalized same-sex marriage back in 2004. And in 2007, The Liberty Hotel redefined hard time when it converted the imposing 1850s granite-wrapped Charles Street Jail into an exceedingly hip, design-driven property in the heart of Beacon Hill. Coincidence? Unclear. But with two weeks to go till Valentine’s Day, I can’t think of a more perfect excuse to head to Boston and suss it out especially with two lovers-oriented specials on tap.
Starting February 1st and valid the entire month, the Lip Locked Up package offers a romantic retreat for two with luxe accommodations, welcome Champagne at check-in, an intimacy kit, valet parking, and some Molton Brown gloss for kissable lips. Though you’ll be behind bars, handcuffs are your responsibility. Rates start at $280, which is a steal (how apropos) considering parking alone racks up at $42 a day.
For more romp-centric room time, book the ongoing Guilty Pleasures Romance package for choice of accommodations, chocolate-dipped strawberries and a split of Champagne, an intimacy kit, breakfast for two in CLINK (tables are in old cells cool!) or via room service, and an extended late check-out till 3pm. Quality cuddles start at $390 a night.
And if you really want to make it official, Out magazine recently named The Liberty as one of the top same-sex wedding venues in the country. Not for naught, featuring gay couples up-front on the web site really speaks to this hotel’s progressive inclusiveness.
Book both packages online or call 866-507-JAIL. Additional amenities, such as fruit and cheese platters, make your own sundaes or ale, almonds and olives, can also be booked ahead of time here for that extra special touch. A bonus for guests only: the Catwalk bar recently opened one level above and encircling the lobby, allowing primo people watching of the reliably hoppin’ bar scene below, especially on Fashionably Late Thursdays when designers show runway looks under the 90-foot rotunda.
