Well, we never said we liked all hotel amenities.

Crowne Plaza International announced today that it is taking aim at heavy breathers by employing official “Snore Monitors” at select U.K. hotels, Reuters reports.

The employees are responsible for roaming the halls on designated quiet floors at hotels in London, Manchester, and Leeds; listening for noisemaking guests; and knocking on doors to hush loud snoozers, even in the middle of the night. Repeat snorers who can’t control their involuntary breathing patterns will have to move out of the quiet rooms.

Although we sympathize with light sleepers, this is one amenity that seems a bit too intrusive. After all, waking an offending snorer mid-REM cycle won’t accomplish much beyond a mumbled apology and a short lull before the honking resumes – and that’s when a loved one makes the request. Why would Crowne Plaza International employees be any more successful at shushing guests?

Fortunately, this isn’t the only measure Crowne Plaza is taking to quiet its halls. In several European and Middle East hotels, the brand is implementing “Snore Absorption” rooms that come stocked with white noise machines, snore-absorbing headboards, and soundproof walls to soak up the racket. It’s a far more practical solution to the problem, though one tiny, low-cost amenity could eliminate the need for anti-snoring measures entirely: Give every guest a good pair of earplugs.
