Realistically, Earth Day can be celebrated any day when dining out. It’s easy to find eco-friendly eateries around the country that serve sustainable food and embrace environmental business practices – online directories like the Green Restaurant Association (www.dinegreen.com) even provide state-by-state listings.

But many of these restaurants and cafés step it up a notch on Earth Day itself by offering special menu items and discounts, and producing special events and entertainment. On April 22, dine out and do good at these eight locations nationwide.

Red Stag Supper Club: Start the day with breakfast at Minneapolis’ Red Stag Supperclub (www.redstagsupperclub.com), where all money raised from 8am to 12pm benefits the Land Stewardship Project (www.landstewardshipproject.org). Minnesota’s first LEED-certified restaurant will serve up locally-produced and organic ingredients, while the LSP will give brief presentations.

Eco-Cafe: Write your pledge to go green on the chalkboard in front of New Orleans’ Eco-Café (www.ecocafeno.com) and you’ll get a free cup of organic coffee. That Friday, featured menu items – like the soup and salad combo – will be made exclusively with ingredients from Holly Grove Farm, just three miles away.

Elevation Burger: The “Pedal for the Planet” promotion at Elevation Burger (www.elevationburger.com) restaurants means a free milkshake for customers who arrive by bicycle to the locations in Austin and Dallas, Falls Church, VA, Montclair, NJ, Potomac, MD, and Wynnewood, PA. At the Falls Church and Potomac locations, purchase an organic, trans fat-free burger, fries, and a drink, and you’ll also get a reusable shopping bag.

Gust Organics: Bicyclists are also welcomed at GustOrganics (www.gustorganics.com) in New York City. This 100 percent organic, wind-powered eatery will offer a 20 percent discount to any diner arriving on bike from 3pm to 7pm. There will be a special menu that day, so cozy up to the world’s first USDA-certified organic bar, and enjoy.

EVOS Milkshake / EVOS

EVOS: At EVOS (www.evos.com) restaurants in Atlanta, Chapel Hill, NC, and Tampa it’s Earth Day, Every Day." But on the real deal, every customer will be offered one of the signature organic milkshakes for free. Made from USDA-certified organic milk and sugar, the creamy treats are served in biodegradable cups made from plant-based ingredients.

Sustain Restaurant + Bar: Among the newest hip places to dine in Miami, Sustain Restaurant + Bar (www.sustainmiami.com) is building a buzz for organic, locally sourced fine dining. A one-day-only Earth Day prix fixe dinner will be offered on April 22. The five-course, wine-paired menu, at $55 per person, includes gazpacho, the signature 50-mile salad, yellow eye snapper, strip steak, and Key Lime pie.

Akasha: Earth Day specials at Akasha (www.akasharestaurant.com) in Culver City, CA, will be something of a surprise; that’s because the menu completely depends on what’s fresh that week at the local fish and farmer’s markets. Pair your food with cocktail specials made with locally-produced Tru Organic Vodka. They will plant a tree for every bottle sold.

Ruggles Green Race / Ruggles Green

Green 6.2 Run: If you like to earn those hearty meals, join 400 like-minded athletes in the Green 6.2 Run, sponsored by Ruggles Green (www.rugglesgreen.com) in Houston. The annual event begins and ends in front the city’s first green certified restaurant. There’s also a 10 percent discount on Earth Day for customers who bring in their own reusable glasses, plus a collection for used cell phones and small electronics.
