I live in New York, and I always have friends asking me about where to stay in the City. The answer is never easy because there are so many options not only by budget but based on what part of town one might prefer and what “atmosphere” appeals to the traveler. I do enjoy finding places, though, where I make a mental note and add to my list of preferred hotels. One such hotel is The Alex.

The Alex Hotel is located in Midtown East (not far from the U.N.) and close to various subway lines. When we talk about Smart Luxury Travel at ShermansTravel, The Alex fits this moniker very well. It is a contemporary-designed (fresh and stylish) and smartly priced medium-sized hotel, with just over 200 rooms.

Room options range from studios with kitchenettes to standard rooms to multi-bedroom suites. The hotel is perfect for anyone seeking an extended stay, with an Amish Market across the street. Business travelers will be comfortable here, as will tourists. There is less of the bustle of a typical Midtown hotel and it almost has the serene feel of a residential building. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms boast high-end amenities. While in my case I did not interact all that much with the staff, I have heard from others that service is indeed excellent.

Finally, for me, other key qualities include dining and the gym. In both, The Alex shines. There is a full-service gym with a very good selection of new equipment. For dining, the Riingo restaurant and bar offers an excellent option – it is not too formal as to be off-putting and yet it presents a sophisticated space. Chef Riccardo Traslavina offers guests a very tasty selection of organic American cuisine. In warmer weather, I am told that the hotel has an outdoor café that is just perfect for a signature cocktail and people watching.

For those considering a New York visit, The Alex Hotel is a smart option. And if you want to splurge, consider the penthouse suite with an impressive terrace overlooking the famous Chrysler building.
