Utah Opens New St. George Municipal Airport
Getting to Bryce Canyon National Park’s red, stalagmite-like rows of rocks and Zion National Park’s towering sandstone cliffs becomes a bit easier this week, thanks to the new St. George Municipal Airport that opened yesterday in southern Utah (about 130 miles west of Bryce and 50 miles west of Zion).
The $159-million overhaul is certainly an improvement over the old, mesa-top airport, which had no room to expand and couldn’t provide jet service. The new, 1,203-acre space is almost five times the size of the original and has enough runway space to service regional carriers like United Express and Delta Connection.
Through February, travelers can touch down on one of five weekday and three weekend flights from Salt Lake City to St. George. In March, United Express launches daily (except Saturday) itineraries from Los Angeles to St. George, making it even simpler for West Coast visitors to reach the southwest corner of Utah with just one connection.
