Seven towers fan out around the resorts crown jewel a series of gorgeous infinity pools and terraces filled with chaise loungers, hammocks, wicker cocoon-style cabanas, and sun beds set in the shallow water. The terraces lead out to the palapa hut-studded stretch of beach that the resort resides on. Poolside, Cabo Azuls informal dining restaurant, Flor de Noche, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but its best feature may be the swim-up bar, complete with tiled underwater stools and guests in designer sunglasses sipping tropical drinks.
Design elements throughout the grounds incorporate dark Oaxacan carved wood, intricate wicker lanterns and nautical rope ornaments. The effect is modern yet soulful, a trademark of West Coast designer Dodd Mitchell whose other projects include the Thompson Hotel Beverly Hills. LA residents will also recognize Cabo Azuls fine dining offering, an outpost of Javiers. The restaurants beachfront deck is the spot to watch the sunset, hear the crash of the surf, and chow down on gourmet Mexican dishes like a crab- and shrimp-stuffed chile relleno.
The real value of Cabo Azul, however, lies in the guestrooms, all of which are suite-style villas with a full kitchen, spa hot tub, and large furnished balcony. Starting at 1,200 square feet, a one-bedroom villa can accommodate 3-4 people with the king-size bed and convertible sofa bed in the living room. In the two-bedroom villas, the junior bedroom is designed like a dreamy Bedouin tent while the master bedroom and hot tub opens out onto the balcony. The sprawling three-bedroom Presidential Penthouses have a plunge pool on the terrace and are a whopping 3,185 square feet.
After a day horseback-riding along the beach (an activity which the resort can arrange), guests can treat their bodies at the Paz spa, whose soothing pebble and shell-bedecked interiors also nourish the soul. The award-winning spa offers unique treatments like the Paz Signature Massage, and its relaxation room sports hydrotherapy pools available to all spa-goers.
This AAA 4-Diamond San Jose del Cabo resort already has a great summertime deal — they are offering a 3-night stay for $699 through Aug. 31 — but one very lucky person will win a 7-night vacation during this limited time sweepstakes.
