Thalassotherapy SpaTrading in the first few chilly days of New York in November for Cabo San Lucas was pretty much an upgrade to seventh heaven. Besides the transporting landscape of carved granite knolls, turquoise waters, and soft-white sands, this manicured coastal sanctuary on the Mexican Riviera is also the perfect spot to indulge in a spa visit – and almost every resort, from the posh to the casual, will gladly accommodate. However, all spas are not created equal – I begrudgingly took it upon myself to scout out one of the best.

Serving the well-maintained beachfront Solmar Resorts properties, the Thalassotherapy Spa is one of but a handful in North America that are known for thalassotherapy. An almost-strictly European healing and relaxation treatment, thalassotherapy is based on the fairly ancient belief that hydrotherapy, seawater, and seaweed offer medicinal joint pain relief and detoxification properties. Spas of this sort are few and far between in the U.S.

Located in the Playa Grande Resort, Thalassotherapy Spa almost hums with the soothing sounds of flowing water from various treatment rooms, where it’s pleasantly ordinary to stumble upon gurgling, shallow stone pools, aromatherapy candles, and marble Vichy (seawater) showers. In my case, it took about one step inside this place to forget my chakras were ever unaligned.

Most treatments involve at least partial use of seaweed masks, combined with natural ingredients like honey and peppermint, and ayurvedic oils, some followed by the Vichy shower. Mineral-rich seawater from the Sea of Cortez right in front of the resort is used in every thalassotherapy treatment. The well-rounded spa menu includes body wraps, facial and massage packages, foot reflexology, and the indigenous Temazcal ceremony (or sweat lodge). Rates hover in the moderate range, starting from about $60 for a 25-minute Sea Spa Salt Glow exfoliation, and rising to $130 to $175 for a massage, combination, or facial, with signature thalassotherapy treatments, such as the Sea of Cortez Pure Body Revival Therapy, listed at $185.

Whether it’s something exotic you’re craving or just a regular Swedish kneading, Thalassotherapy Spa has much to offer in terms of substance, knowledgeable therapists, stress amelioration, and irresistible Cabo charm. Be prepared to fill out a questionnaire at arrival (and possibly sign a waiver), as the staff is very mindful of pre-existing aches and conditions. Don’t think twice about booking a beach cabana massage for the unbelievable view of the Pacific, and ask about the secluded outdoor Jacuzzi (open to spa guests) – so worth the priceless moments of solitude and hot tub-enhanced lounging.
