The Maharajas’ Express (www.rirtl.com), which debuted in early March, is not the only luxury train in India, but it is the first one that traverses the entire country.

Seeing India’s far-flung sites usually requires multiple plane flights; the Express, meanwhile, lets visitors take it all in during one regal go. Passengers can ride between Delhi and Mumbai (seven nights) or Delhi and Kolkata (six nights).

The Darjeeling Limited this is not: The train has 23 air-conditioned, spacious cabins, several suites, two restaurants, and a swank lounge.

In addition to meals and drinks, the all-inclusive fare, which starts at $800 a day per person, covers off-rail activities such as an elephant polo match in Dera Amer, temple tours, and a champagne brunch overlooking the Taj Mahal.
