I happen to love seafood, so I was excited to try a new restaurant on the scene in New York City’s West Village called Choptank. This American restaurant features a fine selection of fish and it is particularly known for its crab. The owners, who grew up in Maryland (famous for the Chesapeake Bay blue crab), have imported the Baltimore specialty.

Choptank is not at all formal but it’s definitely a notch above a classic food shack. As you may expect, the fish-heavy menu includes crab, oysters, peel and eat shrimp, and various white fish. I sampled the fish tacos to start (the most popular menu item) and then couldn’t resist the crab sandwich. Both were excellent, with good flavoring. I would definitely eat here again.

Service also was very good, and Choptank has a fine wine selection. In the back, there is a small outdoor area which is pleasant for eating outside. The crowd is decidedly smart and attractive, as one would expect at a new-ish trendy place in Manhattan. The value here is pretty good. However, if you are really hungry, come on a Sunday when you can order up an all-you-can-eat crab meal for $65.
