I recently visited Midtown Manhattan’s The Surrey to check out the hotel’s $60 million renovation. Interior designer Lauren Rottet essentially remade the hotel from top to bottom, bringing The Surrey into the 21st century while sticking with the traditional elegance of the original property.

To that end, the hotel emphasizes classic pieces with a modern twist, such as a graffitied antique armoire in the lobby or a chaise lounge etched with the history of the Manhattan (including a recipe for the perfect drink) in the swanky Presidential suite. Though it officially relaunched in November of last year, some aspects are still a work in progress – staff continue to refigure the spacious Penthouse suite, and the rooftop garden won’t open until mid-April when the weather warms up (but who would want to be out there now anyway?).

Most of The Surrey’s 190 rooms and suites are Deluxe Salons (video above), 350-square-foot oases with luxurious touches like DUX beds by Duxiana and Lauren Tonatto bath amenities (bathroom video below). The stylish design is also practical, as in the desk that opens into a vanity. Small splashes of color – a potted plant, two green apples – break up the monochrome color scheme seen throughout the hotel. Soon, each room will feature a selection of Darphin products (which are used in the onsite spa) for do-it-yourself treatments.

Speaking of, the Spa at The Surrey is notable for its use of Aboriginal Australian techniques combined with Li’Tya products. A variety of traditional massages and beauty treatments are available as well. The hotel’s Café Boulud also received a design upgrade, while still offering chef Daniel Boulud’s refined take on French-American cuisine. The new Bar Pleiades, named for the celebrated artists’ haunt of the 1970s and 80s, promises to be a welcome addition to an otherwise lackluster neighborhood bar scene, with a chic Chanel-themed décor and fun seasonal cocktails.

Need an extra reason to indulge in The Surrey’s luxury? The hotel is currently offering a free night’s accommodations when you book a two-night stay. Just use code SOCGO when making your reservation. Rates start at $549/night. Book by February 28 for travel by March 31.
