social-media.jpgThe lovely Casa Velas boutique hotel in Puerto Vallarta offers reams of activities that are included in the all-inclusive pricing: yoga classes, tequila tasting, cooking lessons, wine tasting, spa exfoliation, and even food carving with the sous chef. These pastimes are generally what one expects to do at a high-end Mexican beach resort (well maybe not food carving…), but the hotel’s newest free activity for guests is of a different stripe entirely.

Casa Velas is now offering bi-weekly social media workshops.

The workshops “help guests create a profile, add friends, upload photos and “Like” pages in Facebook; create a Twitter account and profile, follow and Tweet updates; as well as create and upload videos to YouTube,”  according to a recent press release.

Initially I wasn’t crazy about this idea–at least to me, half the point of going on vacation is having the excuse to unglue oneself from the computer and the sticky tentacles of email, Blackberries, Facebook, and so forth. Who wants to spend time looking at a glowing screen when there’s a beautiful beach to explore?

Yet the new service is the direct result of a survey of 300 Velas Resorts guests in Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, and Rivera Maya: In turns out that seventy percent of respondents, ages 18 to 64, expressed a serious interest in learning more about social media sharing while on vacation. The majority voiced a desire to share vacation photos, videos, and experiences with friends and family on Facebook, so that will be a primary focus of the workshops.

The idea of learning to easily share vacation photos and videos does sound appealing–digital photos are sure easy to take, but, at least I’ve always found, more tricky than it should be to share. And generally, learning the social media ropes is more fun than work.

What do you think? Does plugging in while on vacation seem counterintuitive or would this be something you’d like to try on your next trip to Mexico?

The prevailing idea behind the classes is to assist guests in sharing their vacation photos and experiences (a smart move on the hotel’s part if guests wind up raving about the AAA Four Diamond hotel all over the Internet).
