Checking into Chicago? How about a gangsta-style stay that pays tribute to Al Capone, America’s most notorious mob boss? Some 63 years after his life of crime, there are hotels, tours—even theater productions that offer an inside glimpse into Capone’s life. With a crime circuit that stretched across Chicago’s North and South sides, Capone carried out his business dealings in some of the city’s top rated hotels.

He first set up shop at the Metropole Hotel before moving his headquarters to the Lexington Hotel’s fifth floor suite (the notorious planning site of the Saint Valentines Day Massacre); survived a bunch of machine gun fire at the Hawthorne Hotel; and was often seen in the barbershop at The Blackstone Hotel (also the site of the first “crime convention” in 1931 overseen by Charles “Lucky” Luciano.) So whether you’re looking for classy Chicago digs or some insight into the man himself—here’s your chance to do both.

The historic Hotel Burnham, originally built in 1895, is one of Chicago’s landmark buildings and predates the modern skyscrapers around town. Stay here and you'll be knocked out by its architectural beauty--there are mosaic floors and red marble walls--and the building itself can claim ties to the criminal activity of the Prohibition era. Interested guests would do well to check out the “Capone 809” package, named after the room and former office of Capone’s dentist, Dr. Frank (later discovered to be a drug dealer.)

The package comes with other amenities like a copy of “Untouchable Chicago, A Ride Through Prohibition,” by Don Fielding; two “Al Capone” cocktails; and a $10 theater discount to “Tommy Gun’s Garage.” The “Capone 809” package is available through Dec. 31, 2010, and five days advanced booking is required prior to arrival. Rates start at $179 per night and reservations can be made by calling 877-294-9712 and giving code “CAPONE 809,” or at www.burnhamhotel.com by entering CAPONE in the rate code box.
