Lufthansa just launched a fall fare sale for some of the coolest under-the-radar destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Veer off the beaten track to explore cities like Bucharest, Marrakech and Istanbul for fares starting at $273 one way (based on a round-trip ticket). If the World Cup inspired you to visit South Africa this summer, fly to Johannesburg from New York for $1092 (R/T), which is about $200 less than competing fares. There are also reduced prices on some favorite destinations like L.A. to London for $365 (O/W).

THE VALUE: Save a couple hundred dollars and use it to stay in a fancy hotel since many of these countries offer affordable luxury. Here are some sample fares:

  •  New York--Milan: $306
  • Atlanta--Budapest: $382
  • Boston--Dusseldorf: $320
  • Philadelphia--Dubai: $448
  • D.C.--Dublin: $284
  • Chicago--Venice: $358

THE CATCH: Return dates include January 2011 but the December holidays are blacked out.

THE DETAILS: Click here to book with Lufthansa. Book by Aug. 25 for travel dates through January 2011.
