Robert McGill was celebrating his 55th birthday when on July 14, he allegedly engaged in a domestic dispute in the confines of his cabin resulting in the death of his wife and high school sweetheart, Shirley McGill, also 55. Although McGill was not in the cabin when his wifes body was found, he was taken into custody later that evening after a fellow passenger alerted the ship’s security of their suspicions.
The alleged murderer was revealed when McGill confessed to the FBI, but his motives remain a mystery. The latest details suggest that financial troubles could have been among the reasons for the couples argument, but have not been confirmed at this time. McGill was arrested on July 16 while the Elation was docked in San Diego, and disembarked the ship in handcuffs alongside FBI agents. A preliminary hearing is scheduled on July 30, but until then friends and family are left wondering why such a tragedy could take place.
